The first member of my Golden Lions squad is finished. I went with the classic red camo colour scheme despite it not really making any sense in the Venusian jungle theme I have going for my Imperial. It could be explained though with this squad just recently being transferred from an Martian battlezone for example. Or them normally operate in the shadows and darkness so the actual camo don't have much of an impact.
The model was really fun to paint and it was one of the first models where I used airbrush for the initial layers of paint. You can see in the pictures further down how he looked when only painted with an airbrush. I will probably do more airbrush work in the future but I need an better airbrush for that. I didn't paint on the Imperial emblem on his right shoulder pad because I heard rumors about transfers in the future so I hope I can use that instead, the emblem would be a paint to free hand anyway. Hope you like how he turned out.

Hey thanks Alexander! For the red and black I actually used only To be more precis, I first sprayed them black with Vallejos Spray Primer, I then mixed red with Citadel Mephiston Red and Warpaints Dragon red (used some Dragon red because it looks almost the same but easier to drop into the airbrush canister). I then airbrushed the black model from the sides on the model trying not to get to much red on the lover parts and make a smoth transition from blackish red to a more deep red colour. I also tried to avoid getting to much red in the recesses where you should have natural shadows. Then I did some more coats of red from above the model where the light should hit the armour more, like shoulder pads etc.
DeleteThis is a extremely basic airbrush technique, and I'm a beginner at this but I'm pleased with the look so far. I will upgrade my airbrush though, I have a really cheap one which works but If I want to do more detailed work I need a better one. hope this helps and if you want to know something more just ask. :)

I am really interested in airbrushing but I have no idea how to do it, since I have never tried it. But I am going to buy a Tau army which i actually thought of painting my riptides with Black spray primer and Dragon Red both from Army Warpaints
ReplyDeleteWarpaints Dragon Red comes in a normal dropper bottle as well. Army Painter who makes them want a 100% colour match between their spray cans and ordinary colour pots. So your idea should work well and in my mind should look awesome.
DeleteIf you want you can try out a cheap Airbrush as I did. The Golden Lions where among the very first models I painted with an Airbrush so I don't think you need much practice to get a similar result on your Tau. Good luck and keep asking if there's anything you want to know that I will try to answer :)
