News: Pictures and info of the new Vampire Counts stuff!

At last some pictures of the the new VC stuff, and it looks great! Want all of these... damn I'm going to be even poorer in January. Anyway here's the new info taken from the first post in the Vampire Counts thread on Warseer. The pics are also from that thread.

From Harry

A summary of the rumours we had:

- VC are next army book to be released in January,
- New unit flesh golems? - something like a mix of large ghoul and zombie ... with something no monsterous infantry has had before ...wings! Dual kit Monsterous infantry ... Ogre size undead monstrocities (can't be more specific) and monsterous flyers.
- New plastic black coach mini ... Dual kit makes two 'war machines' ... big ethereal warmachines ... neither is a Black coach. One is acalled a Coven Throne the other is a Mortis Engine. Coven Throne ... 'Lamian passion wagon' ... Mortis Engine ... 'ethereal alter type thing with added ghosts'. (It runs on undeaded. :D)
- Current Black coach stays and goes finecast.
- Dual cavalry kit wraith riders? and something else ... Black knights and something else?
- New krell,
- New female vampires (Riders on Coven throne and Isabella von Carstein).
- Hints of army book cover ... Dark red of Vampire/Bluegreen tint of etherealness in background.

My understanding is the book has five new units + Lords/Heroes.
That is alot of exciting new options/builds.
Includes four different 'chariot/warmachine' options.

Merry Christmas from me and the Zombie Zsanta

Merry Christmas everybody! Made a little conversion for the holidays, a zombie who looks somehow familiar. Anyway, hope everyone had a great Christmas and got a lot of Wargaming stuff! I got the Battle in the Badlands book and some Chaos Marauder Horsemen, but will buying some more stuff soon. Will hopefully post one more time before it turns 2012, so until then you can check out this Zombie Zsanta (sorry for the bad pics, Zombie Zsanta is a little bit shy).

News: Fimir from Warhammer Forge

Saw this in the e-mail a minute ago, the jigsaw is completed and you can see it is a Fimir as most already have guessed. Those of you who gets the Forgeworld newsletter probably already seen this but for you who missed this, here's a quote from the mail and the pictures.

Christmas Jigsaw Revealed
As no-one managed to guess correctly (!), our three-part tease was in fact a Fimir Warrior, and we’ll be releasing these dread creatures in a set of three during the first quarter of 2012. You can see the completed jigsaw below along with a shot of the unit to whet your appetite, and rules for these detailed resin models will be featured in the forthcoming Warhammer Forge Monstrous Arcana book.

Look awesome and I'm really excited to see what more there is to come for the Monstrous Arcana.

Tutorial: Making a Army Display Board Part: 2

Now it begins to actually look like something and I think it looks quite nice now when it's done. And it looks really nice on the shelf with some miniatures on top of it, much nicer than just having the minis right on shelf by themselves. It's a little time consuming when making these boards but it's well worth it. Now I really would like to do a snowy one for my snow based armies.

Anyway, here's the rest of the tutorial.

Here's it starts to look like something. After I sprayed the cliffs black in Part 1 and has dried I sprayed the cliffs with an old GW spray called Shadow Gray. You can also use a GW Spray Gun or similar or other brands of grey sprays, be careful not to melt the polystyrene to much though. Then I painted the surface of the ground with a brown colour (the large one from Citadel Scenery painting pack). Use a lot of water and you don't need to use to much paint.

Next up is to drybrush both the ground and the cliffs. For the ground I used Ochre from the Scenery Painting Pack and for the cliffs I first used Adeptus Battlegrey on the recesses where the spray paint didn't got in. I then dry brushed the whole cliffside with Astronomican Grey. Then I need the make some grass I first used used the grass from the Citadel Scenery Painting Pack which is kind of a dark, burnt grass. Then When dried took some glue on top of the grass and used a greener grass to get the result as shown on the fourth picture here. There you can also see that I've used some moss and clump foliage for shrubs and bushes as well as flock on some of the hillsides to make it look like moss.

And here is the final result! Looks quite nice if I may say so, added more bushes, grass some undergrowth painted some of the larger stones on the ground and so on. I'm really satisfied and with an army on as you can see below it looks even better. Much cooler to have on the shelf than just some a lot of miniatures everywhere.

Tutorial: Making a Army Display Board Part 1

I wanted a display board for several reasons, for one I would like to show you better photos whole armies and large units and this is a good way to do it. Also it would look much better on the shelf. Anyway I want to do this with as little text as possible, taken quite a lot of pictures so I think they pretty much explains itself, but of course I will tell what materials and so on I used.

I make this into two parts, the board are almost ready but needs one more day to dry. Will try to put up part 2 as soon as possible.

I use a 80 x 40 cm thin wooden board, of course you can take any size you seem fit. On this I have polystyrene (fine-fibred styrofoam) which I cut in to and fitted perfectly on the board. Then I take ordinary wood glue on the bottom and let it set. Don't use any other glue as it may melt the polystyrene.

I then use a knife to cut out the shapes I want to make it look like a mountain wall. Keep the stuff you cut loose as you can use it as larger rocks and add height to some parts.

Then I added some filler to make the transition between the mountain wall and the ground look more natural, I also filled the joints between the two polystyrene blocks.

Then I paint everything except the rocks with wood glue and pour ordinary sand all over. When it has dried I spray paint the rocky areas with chaos black spray. This can melt some parts of the polystyrene but is doesn't matter, it just gives more structure to the surface.

The rest and the more fun parts comes in part two.

Crapcast indeed, my first Finecast model

I haven't bought a single one Finecast model since they where first released. All the bad press made me wait until they've sorted it out, because I don't want a model that have holes and missing bodyparts. And I had probably waited longer but when I needed to renew my WD subscribtion I also wanted the new 2012 model of the White Dwarf himself. I have some of the older ones and now I pretty much collect WD minis, and this one look really nice in my opinion. Sadly the one I got didn't look that great. I got my first Finecast model or Crapcast, Failcast etc. as some people call them earlier today and now I know why people call them different less pleasant names.

At first glance I actually didn't see anything wrong with it, I thought the face looked a little bit thin but I thought it would look better when painted. But then I saw the first thing, the treasure chest was too thin!

Okey that I can fix with green stuff, I won't return it for this. But I looked on the model a bit more and then I found something else.

A large part of the underarm and gun was freaking missing! Damn, yeah now I have to have a talk to GW and get a new one. I can accept the chest but I don't have the skill to fix that arm properly and I don't have to fix it by myself either. The model costs 160 skr (£12.50, $20.75) and you should get a perfect working model and this is not. And then when I took pictures for this blog post I saw some more things wrong with it.

Can't really tell for sure but the face looks strange, to thin, especially the nose and the right portion of the face don't really have any details on it (the eye looks really strange). Also half of the right thumb is really thin as you can see on the picture.

So my first contact with Finecast isn't a nice one I'm afraid, not impressed at all. Hopefully GW will get better in the future but I will continue to stay away from them as long as I can. I hope you others don't have these kinds of problems but I know many of you do. And hopefully the next one I get is better, now I'm off for writing an angry letter to GW.
