Miniature Monday: Space Marine with airbrushed Power Sword

Hey there, missed last Miniature Monday but now I have model to show you. It's actually an model I painted several years ago, but I wanted to try and do a power sword effect that you commonly see now days. You pretty much need to do this with an airbrush, so I wanted to try it out. In the same process I also updated the paint work on the rest of the model to better match how my Guardians of the Covenant looks now.

Took some hurriedly pictures of this guy so first photo the airbrushed power sword is in focus.

And on this one you get better focus on the actual Marine.

I know the middle isn't actually in the middle. Did a mistake on both sides with the masking tape, not getting in the middle. Well it's my first one and I have to be more careful, you learn by your mistakes.
All in all, the technique does not take long to do at all, I did this fast when my little daughter took a nap. For my first try I'm happy with how it turned out. I know I can make smother transitions because the airbrush where not in perfect shape when I did this.

Oh, and here's the recipe. White undercoat (I didn't have that luxury on this one though as it was painted red before), Model Color Sky Blue from Vallejo, then Vallejo Model Air French Blue, and for last Vallejo Model Air Signal Blue. I followed this guy's tutorial pretty much which you can find here. I also recommend the rest of his channel BuyPainted, he has some really nice tutorials there.

Miniature Monday: Space Marine Land Raider

First 40k model showed on this blog for ages it feels. And well this one isn't completely new, I painted this one in 2010 (!?). I never went up on the blog it seems though as I never got a really good picture of it.

Well I did some repainting and foremost did a lot of weathering on it, adding a lot of weathering powders (I used Kromlech Dark Dirt and Soot Black) and some Citadel Typhus Corrosion.

And below is the result, it looks more authentic now and a LOT dirtier. Might do some more changes to it, but this will have to do for now. Will actually do some more Wh40 stuff, but mostly repaints like this one for my Guardians of the Covenant as I got a little morale boost for this army when the author of 'The Dark Fortress' (a Dark Angel fansite) asked if he could put my pictures up on his site, which I gladly accepted of course. Check that the page with my GotC stuff here.

News: Space Hulk: Deathwing for Ps4

For those not familiar with the game, Space Hulk: Deathwing is a first-person shooter experience of Games Workshop's classic Space Hulk board game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Space Hulk: Deathwing offers players the chance to experience a desperate battle against Genestealers in the claustrophobic tunnels of a Space Hulk, as they gain skills, new abilities, and new equipment thanks to experience earned during perilous missions.

You'll take on the role of a Space Marine from one of the most secret and most feared Space Marine Companies: the Deathwing from the Dark Angels. Strap on your Terminator armor and equip the emblematic weaponry of the Space Marines to overcome the threats awaiting you in the Space Hulk. As a Librarian, you will also master the destructive powers of the Psykers. Your skills and performance in battle grant you Fervor Points, to spend on 4 skill trees allowing you to improve your abilities, unlock new powers, access powerful relics, and devastating new weapons.

Awesome I say and looks really nice so far, will most certainly buy when it'a released and I'm glad that I already have an Ps4. Best of all is that you are an Dark Angel and no Ultra Smurf.

Miniature Monday Weekly Roundup

Another week, another Monday and not so much progress last weekend. I attended to my cousins weeding the other day so not much done in the Hobby department during the last couple of days. But things are slowly going forward. I fully expect my Gorebeast Chariot to be finished tomorrow so no pics of it today and I am making progress on my Chaos Warriors of Nurgle as well.

So that is the plan right now, finish the Gorebeast Chariot and then seven Nurgle Warriors including mini unit filler. All which should be done during this week. I also have some other stuff I want to get done and next in line after the WoC stuff is to finish my Guardians of the Covenant Belial count as model. He is already painted but I needed to change the arms and tidy up the painting a little and add some bitz perhaps.

So that's all for now. Gorebeast Chariot tomorrow, until then WIP photos of Duriel my Belial count as.

Guardians of the Covenant: Rhino finished

And the re painting session continues. I don't know why it takes so much longer than I had expected though. It feels like when I finish something on a model which looked fine from the start I must continue and "upgrade" that model more and more. And it almost takes as long as to paint the whole thing up from scratch.

Well not really but it feels like that, at least with the latest model I re painted and that's a Rhino for the Tac squad I finished last time. And I have re painted this one quite extensively with re doing the red on hull, a lot more highlights, battle damage, some minor weathering work, scrolls etc. I'm very pleased with how it turned out in the end though and that's what matters. If you want to compare with the old one look if it was worth or not you can check out the old version here.

Review: White Dwarf January 2013

White Dwarf is continuing the formula like it have since it's relaunch in October, this time you also get a free poster, showing the Hobbit miniatures on one side and the older Lotr stuff on the other. Sure I like when we get posters but I don't think this one is something I would hang up in my little man cave, I would much rather see some artwork or something or even miniatures that we got when Battle for skull pass was released for example.

Anyhow, I think everone knows by nopw what the main release is this month. It's the first 40k army I started to collect, the first legion and called the Unforgiven. The Dark Angels are back! So this is of course the main feature this month and we get a very cool cover showing the new Deathwing Knights. And thus this takes us to the new releases.

New releases
Dark Angels get four new plastic kits, one which makes Deathwing Knights, DW command squad or ordinary DW Terminators with some new toys like Plasmacannon. Ravenwing get's plenty of love with a similar kit that makes RW command, normal RW bikers or the new unit Black Knights. The two last kits is also Ravenwing with a large Landspeeder version called Landspeeder Vengeance and showed in the centrefold is the new DA flyer which makes either the Dark Talon or the Nephilim Fighter.

We also get two new characters in Finecast, the first one is Belial which I'm not very fond of I'm afraid. And we also get a new model for the toughest of all the Interrogator-Chaplains, Asmodai with a very cool looking  model. Shown as well is the GW Online only DA Standard Bearer in Finecast, with a beautifully sculpted banner.

So a lot of goodies for DA and all is showed in easy to look at pictures with great angles and without any special lighting. They actually changed my mind about the new DA miniatures quite drastic as I weren't that impressed at first when I only have seen the pics on the net, now I like all of them accept maybe Belial and still unsure about the Vengeance.

We also get some non 40k this month with some more Hobbit miniatures. Gwaihir and his Great Eagle friends which looks really nice. We also get Fell Wargs without riders and a set which captures one of the scenes in the film when Bilbo first meets Gollum, cleverly called Riddles in the Dark.

That's all so no Fantasy stuff this month =(

Painting and Modelling
We get the usual segments where are used to by now. Army of the month is Jes Bickham's Tyranid army- Blancheitsu is showing more Inquisitorial Warband miniatures but from other people with a similar style. I like this segment but I wish they could expand it further, and maybe show more themed miniatures, like Mordheim one month, Bloodbowl, Lustria, Necromunda etc. I would have liked that very much.

In this month's Hall of Fame we get to see the new plastic Karl Franz on Deathclaw made by Brian Nelson. Parade Ground is a little bit different this time and also bigger, showing the Golden Demon winners from several countries, this is part one so expect from more countries in the next issue. A nice change and we get to see beautifully painted miniatures. Kitbash is about different 40k scenery and not that interesting really. The same goes for Battleground where we see a Dwarf Hold, which looks really nice for sure but we have also seen it several times before.

In Paintsplatter we get a little more in depth tutorial showing how to paint Deathwing, Dark Angels, Ravenwing and also Fortress of Redemption. We only get the usual tips though just going trough every step with what colour you should use, I would like to see more in depth tutorials every now and then showing more advanced tecniques. We also get very brief tips on how to paint Tyranids in Jes green/brown colour scheme and how to paint the Great Eagles wings and skin on the Fell Wargs.

Rules and fluff
Almost non existent, I would like to see the return of chapter approved showing fluff and background for different Space Marine chapters, both loyalists and renegades. Especially about chapters we don't know much about. We get tiny bits of rules, and I mean tiny becasue they are showing small images from some pages from the new DA dex where you can read some point costs and so on but that's it. Would have liked a little preview of the Codex instead and showed us more about the new rules etc.

Gaming
We get a Battle Report this month with DA vs. Chaos Space Marines and I must say I liked it, especially that they modified the scenario with naming one of the CSM miniatures a secret fallen. It made you more interested in the game but I think they missed out on a perfect opportunity in writing a narrative for the game and I also didn't like that we don't know how much each army was in points, because they weren't showed. Big plus for many miniatures painted by the players themselves. We also get a Rivals article this month, this time with Assault Terminators with Th/SS load out versus Grey Knight  Terminators, letting both units try to kill different enemy units.

The other stuff
We get an article by Jeremy Vetock as always and now he is talking about the pros and cons about having a home and away version of gaming. In 'This month in' we get to see some more from the Battle report, doubles 40k armies and what the WD team as done the last month. In the Design studio we get to see some more about the new DA release of course with an little interview with Jeremy Vetock as well. When coming to Forgeworld we see a new miniature I haven't seen before, an Flagellant. We also get some minor info about Blackfire Pass. At Black Libray we get an interview with Gav Thorpe who returns to Dark Angels with the new book Ravenwing. We also get an interview with Josh Reynolds about his upcoming Blood of Nagash series.

Conclusion
Well first of that I can't write these reviews even if I think beforehand that I should. Other than that I quite like this months issue, some nice articles and pictures in there even if nothing is that spectacular. Do hope that they change some things in the near future though as it get a bit stale with the same type of articles and segments all the time. All in all good issue.

News: Dark Angels Advance Orders are up!

So finally the new Dark Angels are up for advance orders, I'm in the process of ordering the stuff I want right now. It will probably be two boxes of Deathwing, one Dark Talon, the Codex and maybe a box a Ravenwing or Landspeeder Vengeance.

I must say that now when I have seen them in WD and photos on the GW homepage I like the models a lot more, especially the Dark Talon/Nephilim Fighter. Still not sure on Vengeance and I'm not keen on the Belial model but the rest I quite like. Think they will look good in GotC colours.

GW has relased two videos showing the Deathwing kit and the two versions of the new Codex, go and check them out down below.

Also if you want to check out more pictures and the Advance order go to GW webpage. Or if you want to help out a fellow wargamer please go to Wayland games who have 20 % on most of the new Dark Angel stuff and also free shipping! I highly recommend them and as a Affliate to them you help me out as well, just follow this link or click the the Wayland Games banner and shop til you drop ;) I know I will.
